Dinner at the Fair

Well, y'all, I finally made it to the State Fair for the first time last night. As a nearly lifelong North Carolina resident, I am embarrassed that it took me so long. I could go the obvious route and blame my parents, but I was a pretty skittish kid, and I wouldn't have taken me either. But now that I have kids of my own I couldn't deprive them, so we loaded up the wagon and the hand sanitizer and headed down to the ole fairgrounds. And it was glorious! The rides, the lights, the worlds smallest horse- it was exactly like the movie "Big" promised. All those fair clichés exist for a reason, especially the ones about the food. We consumed bacon on a stick, giant turkey legs, fried chicken, pizza, fried Reese's peanut butter cups, gyros, funnel cake. Actually, it could have been worse- we were offered
fried pizza, so just regular old pizza is practically diet food in comparison. It can be great fun to revel in the unapologetically unhealthy offerings for a night, but I am certainly glad to get back to eating my veggies this evening! Everything in moderation, except fair food, that is most certainly just a once a year treat.
